Through Us: Witness

Jesus’ Heartbeat Through Us: Witness

alt Once upon a time, in a near-by land, there lived a fair maiden who found herself trapped in a dreary, dead-end life. Until, that is, the dream she had only dared to secretly dream, came wonderfully true. She met her true Prince, the one for whom she was made. To make a long story short: after overcoming a number of tests to their love, they ended up living joyfully ever after.

The story is as old as time. Century after century it has struck a chord in our hearts because it’s our ideal story. It speaks to our deepest yearning– to love and to be loved with a perfect love. Happily, it also embodies the deepest truth about us. For we all really are meant for a Prince– one who has come to where we are from His Father’s Kingdom in order to win us. The “good news” of Christianity is the discovery that this deep down joy, this love of all loves, is meant to be our true story. Our wooing Prince, we find, is Jesus. Call Him, if you prefer, our ultimate “soul mate”- the one who completes us and with whom we find truejoy.

But, as it is with such stories, there is a hitch: If the maiden fails to meet the Prince, the tale turns into tragedy. All of us know scores of people who are made for the Prince, but simply haven’t met him. God has given those of us who have met Him the privilege of being…

 “Witnesses”

Forget the dark images that are often associated with “evangelism.” Instead, think back to when you had just discovered the other gender, but you’re afraid to “go first” in declaring that you “like” someone of the opposite gender. So you spend a lot of time hanging with your peers--
listening, hinting, hunting for clues that somebody that you like might like you if you liked them.  What could be as much fun as hearing the good news of a true connection? Try this: the joy of being the witness who got to pass along to a hungry heart a true report like, “You know what I found out? So and so really likes you.”

Ah, to be a witness of such a thing! At First Covenant, we’re all about that. altWe’re meant to be witnesses, sharing this true gossip, “You know what I found out? Prince Jesus really loves you.” To that end, we aim to promote a natural hanging out with our peers in all sorts of ways. It’s not all we talk about, but sometimes, in the conversation, we get to say, “You know what I found out...?” Telling others that Jesus’ heart beats for them is at the center of who we are.
